Launching 2003 with a massive creative talent, New York based artist and technologist Joshua Davis brings to the ICA a major retrospective of his work. Coming to international prominence in 1998 with web based projects such as dreamless.org, praystation and Once Upon A Forest, Davis has been one of those creatives who actually shaped the look of the internet and also how we navigate through websites. Recently Davis won the 2001 Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in the category Net Excellence and was honoured by the IPPA as one of the Ten Most Creative People in web design.

Il Future Film Festival, diretto da Giulietta Fara e Oscar Cosulich, e' la prima e più importante manifestazione italiana dedicata alle nuove tecnologie, agli effetti speciali e all'animazione 3D e si terrà a Bologna dal 15 al 19 gennaio 2003, aperto, il 14 gennaio, dall’anteprima nazionale de Il Signore degli Anelli – Le Due Torri . Giunto alla quinta edizione il festival si prospetta ricco di anteprime importanti, incontri e dibattiti che ruotano attorno al tema del digitale e delle sue applicazioni. This exhibition shows us the attitude of the legendary French director Jacques Tati on the modernization and mass-culture in the fifties and sixties. Images from Tati's movies are coupled with quotes by the famous architect Le Corbusier. The exhibition includes the drawings of Tati's set designer and co-author of most of his films, Jacques Lagrange.Tati is famous for such cinema successes as "Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot", "Mon Oncle" and "Trafic". His films deliver a humorous critique of the inflated scale, standardization and monoculture of modern architecture. Tati did not write and design his films alone. Jacques Lagrange was Tati's regular set designer from 1953 until the latter's death. Tati always kept Lagrange hidden from the public. A unique feature of the new exhibition is that it shows Lagrange's work in relation to the film images. These drawings reveal that neither Tati nor Lagrange left anything to chance. Everything was meticulously conceived and designed, and Tati and Lagrange both had a keen eye for detail. In mostra, la recente produzione d'oggetti unici 1x1 di Aldo Cibic, un'autoproduzione che dichiara il desiderio di vedere realizzati oggetti più vicini all'arte che al design. Saranno esposti lo sgabello morbido Ring e il lettino Lucum, una sorta di tappeto volante. Entrambi sono realizzati in plexiglass e tecnogel, un materiale morbido ed estremamente sensuale al tatto. All'insegna del gioco si propongono inoltre delle vetrinette sempre in plexiglass. Arricchiscono l'esposizione due elementi della precedente collezione Standard, Asse da stiro (con Giulio Ceppi), 1992 e Chaise Longue, 1991.

The exhibition presents five collective and recently produced art projects to examine the concept of 'geography' in a way that goes beyond its geo-scientific definition. Geography is seen as a model of thought for concepts of boundaries, connectivity and transgression within society. The exhibition takes a critical look at an increasingly consolidated Europe as well as its borders and at the same time presents emerging formations of artistic and activist 'geographies'. Makrolab is a temporary, autonomous art-science laboratory initiated by the Slovenian artist Marko Peljhan. It provides changing participants with means to listen into data from around the world under isolated conditions. The project group Frontera Sur RRVT examines the Spanish-Moroccan border as an area for mobility motivated by various causes. The multi-video work A/S/L (Age/Sex/Location) by Raqs Media Collective from Delhi maps the 'time geography' of shifting identities in the New Economy. It addresses the gendered conditions of the new data outsourcing agent: the online working woman, who is the quintessential 'digital proletarian' of the 21st century. The artist duo Bureau d'études from Paris conceives gigantic maps that disclose an increasingly interconnected network of data-gathering systems involving the military, energy and biochemical sectors as well as the entertainment, information and social surveillance systems. Their pictographic installation World Monitoring Atlas transfers the 'politics of space' to an abstract level. The Milan based collective multiplicity proposes Case 01 and 02 of their ongoing Solid Sea project on the nature of the Mediterranean and the fluxes that cross it. [...]

The exhibition presents eight years building activity of the Austrian architecture office Baumschlager-Eberle. Not only numerous realized projects, also competitions and limited invited competitions have made the office internationally well known. From regional to large international projects, the different scales of architecture will be introduced. Next to the realized, also the projects, which were not built are displayed. The different tasks of construction exhibited next to each other point above all at Baumschlager-Eberle's concern to understand the principles characterizing the location of the respective project. Baumschlager-Eberle understand to combine the cultural continuity of cities and landscapes with the highest level of quality and comfort. They manage to close the ever present gap between architectural language, the structure of city landscape and the actual architecture. Aedes presents different projects such as Münchener Rückversicherung (Munich), Airport Vienna (Vienna-Schwechat), Oosterdokseiland Amsterdam (Amsterdam), Räffel Park (Zurich), Wohnen am Lohbach housing (Innsbruck) and Sirch (Böhen). Guest curated by the architect and theorist Greg Lynn, this exhibition includes works by artists, designers, and architects that reflect an emerging sensibility Lynn has labeled "Intricacy." This notion refers, in the abstract, to a new visual and spatial language of folding, interweaving, and layering -- parts relating to wholes -- that has been heralded by the digital and genetic engineering revolutions. Intricacy announces a gestalt of production: not just CAD-CAM drawings for architects or digital video for artists, but a new way of thinking about the inter-relation of concepts and techniques on an abstract, holistic scale. This exhibition synthesizes a vast geography of ideas and practices drawn from many disciplines and cultural fields. Lynn will design the exhibition's display framework and a central installation. Akin to mid- and late-century machine and material design exhibitions, Intricacy will create an experimental environment through which visitors can walk and physically experience the art and architecture. In occasione di Arte Fiera, Xing presenta a Bologna la terza edizione di Netmage, festival internazionale dedicato ai live media e alle nuove tendenze della produzione creativa elettronica e digitale. Il termine 'live media' sta a indicare un insieme di modalità performative basate sull'uso di dispositivi di emissione visiva e sonora in relazione all'evento dal vivo. Netmage 03 vedrà alternarsi in un'inedita competizione autori mixed-media, vjs, musicisti e performers dall'Europa e USA. Un osservatorio privilegiato sulle trasformazioni nel campo del multimedia design, dell'immagine e dello styling contemporaneo. Un dispositivo scenografico multiscreen, appositamente progettato, permetterà la visione di materiali audiovisivi originali e realizzati ad hoc per il contest internazionale di live media & video-jing, disciplina in cui fonti visive create per web, CD rom, dvd, videografica televisiva vengono performate dal vivo. Prosegue la partecipazione produttiva di Diesel Italia che ha istituito il Netmage Diesel Award, e sarà conferito, al termine del live media contest, al migliore team o autore. Negli spazi della sede del festival, presso Raum, nel centro di Bologna, resta aperta in parallelo un'area attrezzata Netmage à la carte in grado di consentire, su richiesta, una visione più attenta di repertori originali, fonti, referenze e produzioni varie degli ospiti selezionati tramite il bando o direttamente invitati dallo staff di Netmage. Netmage 03 è ideato e realizzato da XING, un network culturale attivo fra Bologna, Milano, Roma, Parigi. Xing progetta, organizza e sostiene eventi, produzioni e pubblicazioni contraddistinti da uno sguardo interdisciplinare intorno ai temi della cultura contemporanea, con una particolare attenzione alle tendenze generazionali legate ai nuovi linguaggi.

Lo studio.eu con sede a Berlino, è stato fondato nel giugno 2000 da tre architetti italiani: Paola Cannavó, Maria Ippolita Nicotera e Francesca Venier. Centrale, nel lavoro dello studio.eu, il rapporto tra architettura e paesaggio ed il ruolo che il paesaggio può assumere non solo nelle trasformazioni urbane, dove questo diventa elemento strutturante dei processi di trasformazione (multiple anger - concorso internazionale, Herzogenaurach 2002: 4°premio, Cottbus-Ostsee concorso internazionale, Cottbus 2001: 1°premio) ma anche nel progetto architettonico, nell'integrazione e compenetrazione di interno ed esterno (bolla di fantasia progetto per una serra nel Parco degli Amici di Pinocchio, Collodi 2001-2002) come pure nella sua completa astrazione (infospazio DARC concorso ad inviti, Venezia 2001: 1°premio). Numerose sono le idee elaborate: quante di queste riusciranno a diventare un progetto realizzato? L'allestimento mette in mostra proprio questa situazione di "sospensione". I progetti non realizzati, sono "on air", sono sospesi, leggeri, vivono sulla carta, lontani anche dalla materialità delle pareti. Ma quando questi si realizzano cambiano, diventano materia. Cambia quindi anche la loro rappresentazione. Essendo ora spazi vissuti diventano qui nell'esposizione immateriali, raggi di luce che proiettati sulle pareti ripropongono l'immagine di una realtà che è altrove. The exhibition includes recent architectural projects that propose unique solutions for the surfaces of varied sites and structures. With computer animation programs like Alias and Maya, along with computer-aided manufacturing and rapid prototyping processes, architects are finding new uses for and definitions of surface-deepening and complicating our notions of what surface is and what it does. Inspired in part by current discussions around contemporary architecture's capacity to expand dichotomies such as inner/outer, structure/surface, ephemeral/material, and utility/decoration, Super-ficial: The Surfaces of Architecture in a Digital Age offers a sampling of ways technology has lent itself to architectural innovation, rendering the superficial more complicated than possible ever before. Le 28 mars 2001, Le Bureau International des expositions (BIE) retient la candidature de la France pour l’Exposition Internationale de 2004 sur le thème « image-Images ». La France n’a pas accueilli de manifestation de cette envergure depuis 1937. A l’issue d’un concours, BTuA / Bernard Tschumi Urbanistes Architectes, est retenu pour assurer la Maîtrise d’œuvre générale du site (51 ha) ainsi que la réalisation de certains bâtiments. L’exposition à la galerie d’architecture propose un concentré des principales étapes de l’Exposition Internationale 2004 qui restera virtuelle puisque le projet a été annulé cet été. Plus qu’une exposition, il s’agit d’une installation qui met en scène la production de l’agence pour le projet de l’Exposition Internationale 2004. A travers des projections le visiteur pourra découvrir les différentes étapes de la génèse du projet et se plonger dans son univers.

José Antonio Coderch de Sentmenat (1913-1984) è una delle figure più significative dell’architettura spagnola contemporanea. Una figura laterale, al margine delle grandi correnti dell’architettura moderna del secondo dopoguerra, il cui lavoro, meticoloso e paziente, portato avanti con coerenza nel tempo, attento agli stimoli della contemporaneità ma anche alla tradizione della disciplina, si distingue per la ricchezza dei risultati raggiunti e la profondità del pensiero teorico che lo accompagna. La mostra promossa dal Col.legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya e dal Ministerio de Fomento e curata da A. Pizza e J.M. Rovira costruisce una retrospettiva delle opere progettate dell’architetto tra il 1940 e il 1964, evidenziando un percorso evolutivo complesso e per molti aspetti ancora da scoprire. Sono esposti più di sessanta lavori, presentati attraverso riproduzioni di schizzi, disegni e fotografie, accompagnati da pannelli esplicativi che evidenziano i passaggi più importanti della riflessione di Coderch sul progetto e sull’architettura. Il Catalogo spagnolo edito da Actar (Barcelona 2000) è disponibile anche, in versione ridotta, in italiano (Mandragora, Firenze 2002).

Da Viipuri a Mount Angel, dalla Finlandia al Wisconsin, ventuno progetti di luoghi e spazi per la lettura illustrati da schizzi e disegni originali, modelli e fotografie provenienti dagli archivi Alvar Aalto di Helsinki consentono di ripercorrere l'intera opera del maestro finlandese nell'arco di cinquant'anni, tra il 1924 e il 1974. La mostra, prodotta dal Museo Alvar Aalto di Jyväskylä in collaborazione con la Haute Ecole d’Arts Appliqués di Ginevra e la Biblioteca delle Nazioni Unite di Ginevra, mette in rilievo la centralità dell’uomo nel progetto aaltiano a cui tutto è commisurato, a partire dal rapporto con il contesto, all’articolazione degli spazi interni e all'invenzione della 'fossa di lettura', alle ricerche sull'illuminazione naturale e artificiale e sull'acustica per il massimo comfort dell'utente, fino al disegno dell'arredo fisso e mobile. Essa mostra anche il rapporto profondo di Alvar Aalto con la lettura e con l'architettura della biblioteca, non un edificio culturale come un altro ma 'il luogo di incontro tra gli uomini e i libri'.

Le projet « New trends of architecture in Europe and in Japan » a été initié en 2001 par la galerie Art Front, à Tokyo, et les services culturels de certaines ambassades européennes au Japon. Le projet a pour but essentiel de développer une coopération culturelle de qualité entre le Japon et les pays de l’Union, à travers la promotion de la jeune création et des savoirs-faire urbanistiques et architecturaux. La version 2002 du projet met, de nouveau, en scène la création architecturale contemporaine européenne et japonaise. La sélection des architectes pour cette seconde édition du projet a été effectuée par Bob van Reeth (architecte/Belgique), Alejandro Zaera-Polo (architecte/Londres, Agence F.O.A) et Toyo Ito (architecte/Japon), elle réunit quinze architectes européens et cinq architectes japonais.

The Netherlands Architecture Institute presents the works of contemporary Dutch architects, industrial and graphic designers, photographers and fashion designers. Viewers are shown that just about everything in life is artificial. The resulting images and objects are easily recognized for what they are, but on closer examination prove to deviate from conventions in various subtle ways. The designs presented in 'Reality Machines' pose questions about the distinction between the real and the unreal, and about the artificiality of our daily surroundings. 'Reality Machines', containing designs from the mid 1990s to the present, demonstrates that a fascination with estrangement exists in a variety of design disciplines. This is made clear by contributions from both designers in various fields and photographers, including those with both familiar names and less well-known ones. The unconventional display system was conceived to match this flexibility and the diversity of the materials. The Main Hall of the NAI has been converted into a space resembling a convention hall, with a false ceiling and carpeting. The objects and images in the exhibition are suspended from a rail system by near-invisible wires. The system is motor-driven and propels the object slowly through the space. This spatial design is a direct reflection of the exhibition concept - a reinterpretation of everyday normality. All the designers represented in 'Reality Machines' work with a similar conceptual design approach. [...]

"Wave UFO" is a dynamic sculptural form that hovers on the border between large-scale sculpture and bio-amorphous architecture. As a futuristic version of an integral work of art, it offers participants a multi-faceted experience involving physical, mental, and aesthetic perception. The visitors participate in the artist's conceptions of interconnected dream worlds. In a capsule within a huge architectural sculpture of whale-like proportions (approx. 5 x 11 x 5 m), which can only be accessed via a staircase, three people can recline in seats for seven minutes. The images projected on the dome screen of the capsule are generated by a kind of interactive bio-feedback loop that reads the brainwaves of the participants. In a computer-animated video projection, Mori sends the "travelers" on a trip to a spiritual cosmos. The concept of the work is based on the idea that all things in this world are interconnected. This should convey to the audience the vision of a "newer" world, a world in which man appears to have overcome all cultural barriers. In addition to "Wave UFO," Mariko Mori shows paintings and drawings that seem like formations from outer space or the visualization of enlightenment. Moreover, Mori has also created a series for the Kunsthaus which consists of sculptures of alien-like figures. Thus, the utopian dream expressed here does not only tie Mori to the historical desire for a unity beyond national identities, but also reflects her identity as a Japanese woman. This complex work, custom-built in Turin in an automobile factory, is presented to the public for the first time.

At a time when 'foreigners' and cultural diversity have become the centre of cultural and political discussions in The Netherlands and Europe, it has become a fundamental cultural task to acknowledge the achievements and the contribution of these artists to the mapping and creation of an artistic field over 30 years. The history of Dutch video art cannot be understood, nor explained, without the contribution of artists from a diversity of cultural backgrounds living and working in The Netherlands. They contributed largely to artistic life in The Netherlands, producing works in which new questions and issues, unexpected perspectives and unusual discourses became established. In enlarging both the subject and the content, they brought new sensibilities to the Dutch artistic arena. The programme includes numerous landmarks in the development of Dutch video art by Marina Abramovic and Ulay, Miguel-Angel Cardenas, Ulises Carrión, Claudio Goulart & Flavio Pons, Raul Marroquin, Nan Hoover, David Garcia and Annie Wright, Elsa Stansfield & Madelon Hooykaas, Heiner Holtappels and Christina Linaris-Corridou; as well as more recent works by Babak Afrasiabi, Tiong Ang, Dan Oki, Nasrin Tabatabai and others. Together with the exhibition, three audio-visual historical documents made in the 1980s will be presented concerning the question of artists of diverse cultural backgrounds working and living in the country.

La mostra è costituita da lavori recenti di Cecchini. Il titolo rimanda alla progettazione di spazi architettonico-scultorei caratterizzati differentemente tramite soggetti e materiali eterogenei che si sviluppano nello spazio con modalità diverse: interni di automobili, ambienti deformati e fotografie di piccole architetture trasparenti, sono i soggetti di questa mostra, che si configura come una sorta di esercizio di architettura. "Densityspectrumzones" è un doppio ambiente costituito da strutture in alluminio, pvc e una speciale pellicola lenticolare 3M, che creano una deformazione continua dello spazio, sia nella sua conformazione strutturale, sia nelle sue qualità di superficie. Nella stessa direzione, una nuova serie di fotografie elaborate digitalmente nel linguaggio usuale di Cecchini: immagini di esterni ricostruiti in uno studio fanno da fondo ad una serie di piccole architetture, involucri e strani spazi, tutti caratterizzati dalla trasparenza e dalla loro collocazione in paesaggi spogli e desertici in cui la presenza umana viene ridotta al minimo. L'atmosfera che ne deriva, si riferisce direttamente al titolo generale: "strutture di monologo", che mette in scena una sorta di isolamento psicologico dei personaggi, di una distanza fra questi e il mondo. E ancora, nei piccoli spazi della galleria, un' installazione di nuove porte replicate in gomma va a costruire una sorta di dedalo claustrofobico, strutturato tramite la presenza di porte singole e doppie ottenute mediante calco dell'originale e successiva replica in gomma uretanica: i vari modelli e caratteri delle porte, o meglio i "fantasmi" di queste, vanno a suddividere l'ambiente in piccole porzioni, dando luogo ad una sorta di continuum di passaggi, in un alternarsi di ingressi e uscite, complicando ulteriormente la conformazione originale degli spazi.

La mostra è una collettiva che vede l'esposizione di due opere ciascuno di quattordici importanti artisti italiani e stranieri, vuole porre in evidenza come, anche nell'arte contemporanea, la progettualità di un'opera installativa o plastica, nasce pur sempre dal disegno, che continua ad essere una fase importante della creatività di un'artista. Gli artisti presentati, sono lontani fra loro, nell'uso dei materiali e dei linguaggi artistici, ma sicuramente vicini nell'uso del disegno come momento di riflessione.
